Best Paper Award: Oanh Nguyen recognised for wine-grape price research

CAVE’s PhD student, Ms Oanh Nguyen, has been recognised by the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) with a Heading East Travel Award, supporting her attendance at the 2026 New Zealand Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (NZARES) Conference.
The financial award enabled Oanh to travel to New Zealand in August 2026 to present her research paper, “Wine-Grape Prices in Times of Wine Overstocks: Evidence from Australia”.
Adding to this achievement, Oanh was then awarded Best Paper at the NZARES conference.
For Oanh, the opportunity to present her research and engage with other agricultural and resource economists was particularly valuable.
“I am grateful to AARES for the Heading East Award, which enabled me to attend the NZARES Conference and present my paper. Receiving the Best Paper Award was a very encouraging milestone, but the most valuable part of the conference was the discussion around the research” said Oanh.
The conference covered a broad range of issues in agricultural and resource economics, including greenhouse gas mitigation, biodiversity, farm behaviour, technology adoption, food systems and consumer choices.
Oanh particularly valued the opportunity to hear how other researchers approached their research questions, worked with data limitations and communicated their findings to different audiences. She also appreciated the Early Career Researcher session, which highlighted the importance of constructive discussion and connection in developing research.
The ARES Heading East Award requires the recipient to present a paper at the NZARES conference and is intended to support early-career Australian researchers. Awards like these provide valuable opportunities for emerging researchers to present their work, build connections and gain new perspectives.
Congratulations to Oanh on both the Heading East Award and Best Paper recognition, and we look forward to seeing her research continue to develop.
